CORETEL
PETITIONS MARYLAND PSC TO STAY
VERIZON'S 271 APPLICATION
-- Annapolis-based CLEC cites
repeated pattern of anti-competitive tactics --
Annapolis,
MD, September 9, 2002 -- Core Communications, Inc. (CoreTel) today
petitioned the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) to stay Verizon's
271 application pending resolution of interconnection disputes with CoreTel.
In
the petition filed at the PSC this afternoon, CoreTel, the Annapolis-based
Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC), cited a still-unresolved complaint
CoreTel filed three years ago with the Maryland PSC outlining Verizon's
"unlawful policy of refusing to use existing facilities to provide
entrance facility interconnection."
"As
a facilities-based local provider, CoreTel has no vested interested keeping
Verizon out of the long distance market," said Bret Mingo, president
of CoreTel. "At the same time, however, the PSC should not let Verizon
end-run the formal complaint process through the section 271 proceeding.
CoreTel has done the work in its formal complaint to demonstrate that
Verizon's standard practices and policies for interconnection discriminate
against CLECs. There is just no way Verizon can satisfy the section 271
checklist with patently discriminatory policies in place."
